It's scummy from Smarthuiyuan's blog

They kill servers after 18 weeks I believe. Which locks you from a large portion of the material because they induce you to be online for anything besides play today to work. Not to Mut 21 coins mention unskipable 2 -3 minute ads in a $60 game. Wow, thats disgusting. Sorry about that im not a sports enthusiast. Consumers get exactly what they paid for. The sports title fans did it to themselves. Just like 2k does with their sports games? You get 18 weeks of servers, then you need to purchase the new you to keep playing online. 18 months, holy shit, that's even shorter lifespan than Battleforge had. (now as fan project Skylords Reborn) Yes, rather than charging nothing for the rosters, they efficiently devote a minimal sum of money and cost you 60$ to this.

Since Madden's business model is built around Ultimate Team, a match mode where you slowly accumulate more powerful players over the course of this year (preferably by purchasing arbitrary packs, naturally ). EA spends the entire year in a drip feed, in which they keep bumping the quality of players that you receive. You start the year with 70-80 OVR players, by January you're getting 85 OVR, by April you receive some 90 OVR, and then right before another game they are giving out 95 OVR players to keep people interested and engaged. If they didn't release a new Madden, there could be nothing to work toward (everyone would have elite rosters) and folks would walk away. It's scummy, but the entire Madden franchise relies on individuals spending hundreds on MUT and then leaping to buy Madden 21 coins the next game a year later. On the flip-side, if you do not care about being always up-to-date with rosters, most sports games now have profound"end-of-life" sales just before the next one comes out.
